The notes make the point that colour is a distraction here so take the opportunity to desaturate images where it seems best to demonstrate the relevant photographic element.
The first exercise is positioning a point, very similar to the object in a different position exercise in the Frame.
Examples of points in a frame with a homogeneous background are not common. The notes use a boat on the sea. Birds in the sky also come to mind but there one immediately sees that the bird has to be more than a point for the image to work, although this image I took as part of the composition sequence probably does work:
We get a distinct feel from this image that the bird is looking to our right for something and the empty space invites us to think what that might be.
I first took a series of three images of single subject, I selected a simple subject: a postbox along the road. I desaturated the background to emphasise the post box more.
The problem with this cenral position is that there is no suggestion - it is just there.
Moving the postbox to the left a little helps - I think we are now anticipating something or someone on the right.
The post box near the left edge works a lot better - we are now anticipating someone entering from the right, perhaps to post a letter?
Some other images:
Rather like the post box, setting the flag to one side of the image does add the sense of motion from right to left - we almost picture the golf ball heading to wards the hole.
The flower is set off centre - in this case it does not matter greatly where it is as we are not really seeking motion. Images of flowers can work centrally where the backgorund is uniform. Came across an online example on http://rvascof.gfxartist.com/artworks/157212 where a centrally placed rose does not work so well as the background is non uniform.
In this image the tree qualifies as a point as small in the frame and clearly contrasts with surroundings.
The point here has to be central horizontally for the lead in diagonals to work as well as the lead in from the pavement. But the point is off centre vertically and that is crucial to the effect.
